FFF85 - SUTERA CORDATA

Sutera cordata also known by the name Bacopa or Ornamental Bacopa (not to be confused with the genus of that name) is a species in the genus Sutera (Scrophulariaceae) and is now more properly called Chaenostoma cordata, and best known in its cultivated forms. Another synonym is Sutera diffusus. It originated in southern Africa, and is a tender perennial forming a ground cover, but often used in hanging baskets. Small dark green heart shaped leaves and small round five-petaled white flowers at the branch tips can be found year round, but at its prime in spring.

It is notable as the source of a breed marketed as "The Pikmin Flower", after the GameCube game "Pikmin". The plant was bred to have a similar appearance to most flower images found in the game. Other cultivars include 'Bridal Showers', 'Snowflake', 'Giant Snowflake' and 'Pink Domino'. The illustrated cultivar is Sutera cordata 'Snowstorm Pink' ("Pink Bacopa"). It has a profusion of small pink flowers, which look quite striking en masse.

  5. These look almost like violets. I have this plant in peach flowers with red centers on the petals. Very floriferous, too.
